Beautiful Ethiopian Mesobs

traditional ethiopian baskets

The internet is an amazing place to explore.  In an instant you can learn about a handicraft or work of art from a place halfway across the world.  That's what I love about it.  The other day, while perusing the web I came across an image of a traditional Ethiopian basket, or mesob.  The colors left me awe-struck, and I immediately wanted to learn more.

These colorful woven baskets are actually tables.  Traditional Ethiopian meals are eaten on the mesob.  The top of the mesob is lifted off and a platter is placed in the center of the basket table.  I have been to an Ethiopian restaurant before, but never had this experience.  I have to look for a place here in the states that serves the meal over these amazing baskets.

You can find some beautiful images of mesobs on the web.  I am still looking for a place that sells these gorgeous baskets.  I would love to have one in my home.

If you come across a website, or know of anyone who imports them, please let me know.  For now, let's all just enjoy how beautiful these handcrafted pieces are.

  8. I adore this. Such a decorative way to hide function. These would work perfectly with my sister's moroccan inspired decor - my latest project. I'm sure a bit of Ethiopian design would fit in perfectly!

  9. Blue Nile Ethiopian Cafe in Tempe, Arizona uses messobs and carved wood Ethiopian stools to offer traditional seating to their customers. They also have tables and chairs in the other half of the restaurant, for those who prefer to dine that way. Abel (ah-BEL), the owner, might have some info on how to get them. Either way, if you are ever in Phoenix, you should eat there. Hope this helps! - Lesley
