Original Art: Prettymaps by Aaron Straup Cope

Aaron Straup Cope Map

Artist Aaron Straup Cope creates some of the most beautiful maps I have ever seen.  His Prettymaps series featured on 20 x 200, explores aerial views of some of our favorite cities.

Aaron Straup Cope Map

The unexpected colors in these aerial maps are breathtaking.  Mixes of pink, orange and teal blue, make them truly modern.  Prints start at just $20 and would be beautiful in simple white frames.

New York Loft Living

NYC NOHO 016

I am a huge fan of loft living.  It's one of my dreams to live in a New York City loft, and this one designed by Bella Mancini is at the top of my list.  The white walls let in light giving this loft the bright and open feel I love.

NYC NOHO 020

I love the idea of tucking away the bar and books behind built-in shelving.  Super-stylish, functional and it keeps the space free from clutter.

NYC NOHO 021

This ladder walk-up is definitely for the adventurous.  I will likely need stairs in my own loft.

NYC NOHO 017

And the brick wall adds such a sense of history.  Oh, how I would love to live here!

Have you every imagined yourself living in a New York loft?

My Life Is An Open Book...

IMG00079-20100919-1630

I am so excited to participate in Hello Splendor's fabulous blog crawl.  Get to know a little more about your favorite bloggers as we write on the topic, My Life is an Open Book.  I loved reading 6th Street Design School's post yesterday, and can't wait to read about the life of Will @ Bright Bazaar on Monday!

So, here's my life...

blog crawl

Author: Why me of course, Jeanine Hays.  I've gotten to know many of you over the years here at AphroChic.  I'm a textile designer who loves to blog and who has a passion for interior design.

"Girl in the City" - Watercolor painting of girl in downtown San Francisco

Setting: San Francisco, CA.  I would love to say sunny California, but don't be fooled, Northern California can get cool and foggy.  I've lived in Cali for six years, but I'm an east coast girl at heart (more on that later).

photo

Characters: My husband, Bryan Mason.  We've been together for fourteen amazing years!  He is the love of my life, my inspiration and my business partner.

photo-3

I also had to include my super-talented sister Angela Hays.  She is one of my greatest supporters.  I have no idea how many times I've roped her into helping me style a shoot or participate in an AphroChic project.  And she is a design talent herself as the Visual Associate for Room & Board in DC.  I'm super-proud of her!

photo-1

The plot:  Well, it's a very long story, but it sort of goes like this.  I went to law school in 2001, and somehow became addicted to interior design and home decor (I'm pretty sure it was the Crate & Barrel across the street from school that did it).  After graduating from law school I moved out to Cali and got my first job as a policy attorney.  Two years later I decided to start a blog about my passion, interior design.  Another two years, and I thought...hey, maybe I can also contribute something to the design world.  With a healthy obsession for throw pillows I decided to start my own line and the first AphroChic pillow collection was born!  The journey has been amazing, and I can't wait to see what's next.

The twist:  Well, it wouldn't be a good story without a major twist would it?  You know how I told you I was an east coast girl at heart?  After six years on the left coast, my hubby and I made an impromptu decision over the summer to move back east.  In two months we pack our bags for Washington DC and another incredible adventure.  So look out Washington, AphroChic is on its way!

Whew!  My life really is an open book.  Hope you enjoyed it.  Have a wonderful weekend and be sure to check out more Blog Crawl posts next week.

Fall At Haus Interior

haus interiors showroom

New York store, Haus Interior, has some lovely items for Fall.  The boutique's latest catalog includes items that fall into a neutral color palette, but make a big impact with texture and unique design.  Here are a few of my favorite accessories to bring home this season.

Lamp

Lighting that makes a statement is a must.  This Iron Cross Lamp boasts clean and sophisticated lines, and a wonderful jet black color.  Add a soft glow, and this understated piece will add a special touch to your living room.

Super_Absorbent__Towel

I am so in love with stripes this season!  And this throw featuring thick gray stripes is the perfect way to bring the stripe trend home.

Porcelain_Paper__Plate

Paper plate please?  How about this Porcelain Paper Plate that's a true work of art.  Put a group of these on display for your very own art installation.

You can view more items for Fall at Haus Interior.  And get 10% through October 15th with code FALL10.  Happy shopping!

Stina Persson

I am so happy to share with you photos from the opening of the Stina Persson Perfectly Flawed exhibit at Gallery Hanahou.  I posted about the exhibit last month, and was so sad that I couldn't attend in person.  But even in these images, you can get a feel for how beautiful these un-retouched works of art are.

Full of bright pops of color, eclectic wall coverings, and some gorgeous gowns, Jason's atelier showcases modern glamour at its best.

Style Talk: Laurie Furber, Pottery Barn

Laurie Furber, Pottery Barn

Yesterday, during my weekend errands, I took a walk into Pottery Barn in San Francisco's Marina district.  One step into the store, and I was completely transported into a warm and cozy atmosphere that truly celebrated the essence of the Fall season.

The visit was in anticipation of today's Style Talk interview with Pottery Barn Senior Vice President of Merchandising, Laurie Furber.  Laurie manages the Pottery Barn catalog and has stopped by today to give us the details on Pottery Barn's design philosophy and what's in store for Fall.

pottery barn fall

Please tell us about your role at Pottery Barn?

My team and I build each season’s assortment from a combination of beautiful products created by our product development team and inspiration from restaurants, hotels, books, magazines, museums and our own homes.  One of the wonderful things about my job is that I’m constantly surrounded by talented people – designers, creative directors, photographers, stylists.  I have a non-stop infusion of creativity and inspiration in my job and in my life.

What has influenced your personal design aesthetic and the work you do for Pottery Barn?

My mother has been a big influence on my style: she has a great eye for design, and has always had a very practical approach to décor.  For example, if she loves something, she works it into her room.  If she uses something constantly, she finds a way to work it into her décor.  When I was growing up, she always had baskets hanging on the wall in her kitchen – when she needed one, she just grabbed it off the wall.  She has no use for things that are high maintenance in her home.  You can always put your feet on the coffee table at my mom’s house.  I’ve picked up many of those traits from my mom, and tend to use the same philosophies when building rooms for Pottery Barn.

Pottery Barn Accessories

What place does global style have in the Pottery Barn design philosophy?

I love to travel, and I believe that inspiration can be found anywhere if you’re open to it.  I make a point of always staying in local hotels, rarely ordering room service, and exploring both culture and commerce while I’m traveling so I can bring the best of every trip back to our customers.

Consumers and designers both have fairly free access to design and ideas about design from all parts of the world, so the classic American home now tends to be a fusion of many influences based on the homeowner’s life experiences.  As a result, home décor is so much more sophisticated and interesting than it was ten years ago.

At Pottery Barn we strive to make our rooms look like they’ve been built over a lifetime rather than delivered all together at 2:00 on a Tuesday.  Consumer interest in eclectic and global style really plays right into what we do best.

Many companies are forming innovative partnerships with artisans.  Can you tell us about your partnership with the women of Gee's Bend?

We established our Museum Craft Collection to celebrate some of the beautiful folk art in America’s history, which is such a rich source of classic design.  We felt the American Folk Art Museum, the Shelburne Museum and Gee’s Bend were the perfect partners for our launch, each for different reasons.  Our intention with each of the institutions was to reproduce an original piece as closely as possible to the artist’s original intent, and a portion of proceeds for the sale of our reproductions is paid to each of the institutions.

We were especially drawn to Gee’s Bend because we admire the way the artists have interpreted traditional quilt patterns into modern works of art, each using their own sense of composition, color and scale.  Our customers have really loved the collections, so there will be more beautiful reproductions to come.

Pottery Barn entertaining

What are some of the newest trends and products at Pottery Barn?  How can people integrate these items into their spaces?

We love it when trends play into what we do best:  rooms with character and soul are in, and that’s what we do every day!  Provenance has become very important to our customers, so they love collections like Museum Craft, our collection of found objects, our handmade pillows and rustic furniture finishes that look like they have some history.  And great basics are always strong, but especially now, it seems consumers are willing to invest in foundation items like our 400 thread count classic sheets that they can use and appreciate for a long time.

To integrate a new, authentic piece like our Markham Bar into your home is easy:  put it in a room you love, prop it with things you love, and use it every day.

Finally, can you give us your thoughts on the Fall collection?

Our Fall collection is one of my favorites because every product has a great story.  From the Museum Craft Collection, to the Toscana Dining Table designed for us by one of our favorite furniture makers, to the PB Comfort Sofa made in our own factory in Hickory, NC, there’s history and beauty everywhere!

Thank you for taking us inside Pottery Barn's Fall collection Laurie!  I love the warm and soulful vibe, just in time for Autumn days.

Showtime House 2010

Borgias
The Borgias Great Room by Keith Baltimore

It's that time of year again.  Time for the Showtime House, an amazing collection of interiors inspired by Showtime's most popular shows.  Whether you're a fan of Dexter, Weeds, or The Big C, the Showtime House has a space for everyone.

Dexter

Debuting last week at the Cassa Hotel and Residences in New York, this year some amazing designers were featured to present their vision of their favorite show.  Interior designer Jeff Andrews created the Dexter Refuge featured above.

BigC

The Big C Lounge by BG Studio International is one of my favorite spaces.  I love the omnipresent chandelier.  Just gorgeous!

Weeds

And the Weeds Lounge by designers John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon is a beautiful blend of granny chic with a bold floral twists.

You can see more from the Showtime House right here.  Take some time to explore these absolutely innovative spaces.

Fall At Anthropologie

Anthro Sept Catalog

I love the images in Anthropologie's September catalog.  They capture the feeling of Fall days.  As we layer our homes to become a little bit more cozy and warm this season, Fall is also the time to bring in deep hues and texture.

Anthro Sept Catalog

Mustard yellow, cranberry and deep blues are making their way into interiors this Fall.

Anthro Sept Catalog

You can bring color in through pillows, throws and even wallpaper.  Feature walls are very in this year.  Even papering just a portion of a room, like in the photo above, can make a real statement.

Anthro Sept Catalog

Finally, I love the use of rugs to add color and texture.  This shag rug is a unique take on the cream flokati rug that you're seeing everywhere.  Cozy and comfy just in time for Fall evenings.
