Happy Holidays!

Fashionable Notes Dress From Christmas Tree

A week ago I arrived to the East Coast traveling to visit family and friends for holiday vacation. I've been to some of my favorite cities including Boston, New York and now Philadelphia. Unfortunately all of this travel has caused some inconsistent posting due to snow storms, travel delays, and all of the fun of experiencing a White Christmas. Today, my holiday vacation officially begins, so I will be taking off and will return back to the blog on January 4th.

Until that time, I have to tell you that it has been an absolutely wonderful year here at AphroChic. Earlier this year the Style Talk series launched with interviews with some incredible designers including Nate Berkus! My husband and I launched the AphroChic Shop and have received incredible support from so many of you. I also had the fun of meeting many readers at our launch event at DesignPhiladelphia.

In the New Year, AphroChic will be hosting even more events to meet you and debut new work. And you will also see us in some of your favorite places. On January 5th, please look for AphroChic pillows in the February issue of Lucky Magazine! You will also see me on Luckymag.com from January 4th-8th talking about decor for your home in the New Year. And one of our pillows will be featured in the "Shop The Issue For Less" section from January 5th - March 1st!

2009 has been wonderful, and I promise 2010 will be even more exciting on the blog and in the shop. Have a wonderful holiday season. I'll see you next year!

Giving Back: Two Talk

Two Talk image

On this final day of giving, I thought it would be great to talk about giving back. As 2009 wraps up and we work on wrapping presents and gifts for family and friends, it's also a time to give back to your community and to those less fortunate.

I was recently introduced to a blog, Two Talk, which highlights the work of two women, Lisa Evans and Mary Wolfe, who work to give back and improve the lives of children around the world.

Two Talk image2

Inspired by 3191 A Year of Morning's, the popular blog turned book by Stephanie Congdon Barnes and Maria Alexandra Vettese, Two Talk captures every day moments that many of us take for granted, like baking a cake, or playing in the snow. It's a truly inspiring visual dialogue about the lives of children and families that have been impacted by war and disaster, but who are thriving because of the work of the charity Lisa and Mary work for, SOS Children's Village.

Two Talk image3

The blog updates with a new photo and conversation every day of the year, and Lisa and Mary are also looking to publish a book of the remarkable photos and stories they have captured.

Two Talk image4

Two Talk is a beautiful and unique way to share their work, and I truly hope that it can be an inspiration to those of us who want to make the world a better and more beautiful place.

12345...Days of Giving

holiday giving week

Welcome to five days of giving at AphroChic this week! To celebrate the holiday season, I'm hosting a week of giveways that you are sure to love. It's my special holiday gift to you.

9781416569909

Our first giveaway is a wonderful book donated by our friends from Simon & Schuster that will be a favorite among art lovers. The City Out My Window: 63 Views on New York provides a unique look out the windows of some of New York's most famed residents. Architect Matteo Pericoli's metticulous illustrations reveal unique perspectives of the city through the windows of its residents.

Illustrations include views from the home of Wynton Marsalis, Annie Leibovitz and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

AnnieLeibovitzr2_17C

The illustrations are absolutely amazing. I'm in love with how innovative this project is. Each drawing, each perspective, provides you with a window into the lives of the inhabitants of this amazing city. As Percoli says, “The way you see the city from your window is yours and only yours. And your view describes your city as much as it tells something about yourself.”

If you love design merged with art and innovation, then this book is for you.

To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment. You have until Friday, December 18th. One lucky winner will be picked randomly after the 18th. Good luck! And remember, come back for another fantastic giveaway tomorrow.

Update: This giveaway is now closed.  A winner will be announced the week of December 21st.  Thank you for your comments.

Stylish Stocking Stuffers

Every year I buy a few small gifts that are sure to make perfect stocking stuffers. While some believe in candy and gift cards, I like to search for stylish gifts that are small enough to fit into a stocking, but that will make a big impression. Here are some stylish stocking stuffers that your friends and family will love.

The Anthropologie From O'Keeffe necklace is an absolute treasure. Any girl would love to wake up and find this gorgeous necklace in her stocking.

Chic Holiday Ornaments

Elle Decor Holiday

I know that many of you will be trimming your tree this weekend. Our tree has been up since the day after Thanksgiving. I love to get an early start so that I can enjoy it for a few weeks before we travel back to the east coast for the holidays.

One of the things I enjoy most about the holiday season is searching for a new ornament for the tree. We have a tradition where we choose only one new ornament a year. It's so much fun looking for an ornament that will make the tree special, and it's a beautiful way to start a collection that can one day be passed down to our children and grandchildren. The ornaments in this post are sure to be family keepsakes. They are all very chic, and will add a special touch to your holiday tree.

Forever 21 Goes Haute

forever 21 3

I learned from my friend, artist Leigh Viner that Forever 21 just launched its first magazine. Leigh's fashion illustrations are being featured in the first issue, and I had to get my hands on a copy.

forever 21 2

The premiere issue is currently in stores and online, and is a wonderful showcase of the funky fashion Forever 21 is known for. I personally fell in love with the vision for their exclusive line - Twelve by Twelve

forever 21 1

An ode to luxurious style, Twelve by Twelve offers chic looks at a very affordable price. These looks are perfect for those Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.

Six Tips for Merry-Making

kate spade holiday

Every year we host holiday get-togethers inviting friends over to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Since we travel during the holidays, we usually get together with friends for a small gathering in early January. It's one of my favorite parts of the holiday season.

I love entertaining, and over the years have found some key ways to make party planning fun and easy. Whether an impromptu gathering or a planned party with some of your favorite people, here are some tips for pulling together the perfect party for merry-making.

#1 Find the perfect invitation.

kate spade vintage cocktails invite

Of course you can call, text, or even tweet friends these days to let them know about your party, but it’s still nice to send a personal invitation. If your friends are high-tech you can use services like Pingg or even Facebook to invite them for a gathering. However, a paper invitation is always a nice touch. I love these cocktail invitations from Kate Spade. Fun and casual, they’re the perfect invite for light holiday fun.

#2 Decorate and trim the tree.

west elm holiday entertaining

I wait all year to put up the Christmas decorations. It is absolutely my favorite thing to do. At home we go out of our way to stay away from traditional red and green. Since we use a lot of pink and plum as an accent color at home, our Christmas decor reflects that same palette. Our Christmas tree is trimmed in pink, purple and black baubles, and we place Christmas decorations in every room of the house. Find holiday decorations that complement your interior for a simple way to bring the holidays home.

#3 Set your table a part.

odddinner1

You're having a party, so of course you need plenty of tableware for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. These number dinner plates from Christopher Jagmin will make for a unique way to serve up appetizers. Get a set of even and odd numbers so that you have enough for guests.

WC_flute_gold

Add a little holiday bling with sparkly items like these gold champagne flutes. Whether saying Merry Christmas or toasting in the New Year, these flutes will make any party feel extra special.

#4 Serve it up.

west elm butler tray

Find a unique way to serve your guests all the delightful goodies you've prepared for them. Think about what works best for your space. At home we like to host sit-down dinners in the dining room. For a small space, a buffet might be the perfect way to host a group of friends. Something classic, like this West Elm Butler Tray + Stand, is a great place to set glassware and dishes for a buffet.

#5 Give something special.

crate and barrel nutcracker ornament

Whenever you host guests for a special gathering be sure to give them a little something to show how much you enjoyed their company. At holiday time, an ornament that they can put on their tree at home will make the perfect gift. I personally love these Nutcracker Ornaments. They will make a treasured keepsake that your friends will put on their tree every year.

#6 Make merriment.

mariah carey all i want for christmas

And of course, don't forget that the most important thing of all is to have fun and enjoy this special time with friends and family. My husband is a playlist master, and each year he programs the I-Pod with a mix of old and new Christmas music. My personal favorite is still Mariah Carey's Christmas album. I know it's old-school, but I just can't help myself.

Have fun as you get ready for holiday celebrations over the next few weeks! And please share any tips you have in the comment section for how you throw the perfect holiday gathering.
